What I See, & How I See It

TRADING ASHES

Caught in the corner of a smokey room.
Holding my breath, drowned by the fumes.
Lost in the smolder. Everything’s consumed.
Fully possessed by this searing tomb.
The heat swallows in seconds
The entire life I’ve spent.
The flames rage over every dream.
He has no pity, this unforgiving thief.

I’m trading ashes for a new beginning.
No more sadness. No more forsaking.
I may have burned, but I’ll return.
I’ll shake the dust from this death,
I’ll overcome, I’ll become. I’ll rise again.

The roar settles, the black bleeds.
The embers feed on the breeze.
There’s only a skeleton standing still.
Bracing for the next ignited kill.
Every step crushes what once was.
I keep blinking, but my eyes won’t shut.
Remnants stain the atmosphere.
I have no life, no home, only here.

I’m trading ashes for a new beginning.
No more sadness. No more forsaking.
I may have burned, but I’ll return.
I’ll shake the dust from this death,
I’ll overcome, I’ll become. I’ll rise again.

At my feet buried inches deep
Powered memories of black and gray –
Promises from yesterday
That will no longer be.
But what comes after death’s sting?
What can tragedy bring?
Maybe new life can be born from fire.
Maybe it can inspire.

I’m trading ashes for a new beginning.
No more sadness. No more forsaking.
I may have burned, but I’ll return.
I’ll shake the dust from this death,
I’ll overcome, I’ll become. I’ll rise again.
