What I See, & How I See It

HUMMINGBIRD

hummingbirdBorn in pain, raised in sorrow – they call you by their grief.
Too frail to fight, too young to know, engulfed in their debris.
Little bird wanting, sure no one would ever see,
But your wings give you away, and so your sweet heart breaks.

Trampled by shame, bruised by rage, they try to make you lame.
Your light stifled, your gift trifled and your hope grows lonely.
Little bird crippled, sure no one would ever see,
But your wings give you away, and so your sweet heart breaks.

Oh little bird, keep humming,
Oh little bird, keep humming.

Time fragments and slowly bends the cage that holds you in.
Your dream withers, your soul laments, as it scatters in the wind.
Little bird forgotten, sure no one would ever see,
But your wings give you away, and so your sweet heart breaks.

Hues beam within your wings aching for the thrust
That’ll scorn the greedy thorns and shake off the drowning dust.
Little bird aging gray, sure no one would ever see,
But your wings give you away, and so your sweet heart breaks.

Oh little bird, keep humming,
Oh little bird, keep humming.

The rust collects, the bars threaten. You never mind their taunts.
You rest easy in one thought, the day you’ll be uncaught.
Little bird dreaming, one day you will see,
The thing your wings always crave, the thing that soothes your heart-break.

Then came a storm…

A thunderous howl descends, a feverish light suspends
The wretched fear that abounds, the beasts that snuffed you out.
Little bird unbound, your eyes can finally see,
These battered wings are your strength unbeaten by heart-break.

Oh little bird, keep humming,
Oh little bird, keep humming.

The death flickers in the heat chastened by the sun.
With every beat of your wings, you seize your chance to become.
Little bird inspired, the colors that you see.
Let your wings take you away, embrace your old heart-break.

Born in pain, raised in sorrow – you have a new name.
In the mire, you let go and rose above the remains.
Little bird reborn, unburdened by what they see,
Grounded for so long, let your wings be your song.

Oh little bird, keep humming,
Oh little bird, keep humming.

The vanquished now restored, they don’t own you anymore.
Yet a piece of your heart beats longing for what could be.
Little bird unabashed, hoping some day they will see
The beauty in your wings, the love that set you free.

Oh little bird, keep humming,
Oh little bird, keep humming,
Oh little bird, keep humming,
Oh little bird, keep humming…
